Leo Matthew is bursting onto the hip-hop scene with his self-expressive debut album, The Boy From Nunavut. The 6-track album is a collection of authentic narratives inspired by the hardships Leo and his community have faced, as well as his constant drive to persevere through it all.
Hailing from Kimmirut, a small community situated on Baffin Island in Nunavut, Leo draws inspiration from the challenges and triumphs of life in the North, infusing his music with a unique perspective that resonates with audiences worldwide. Though resources are scarce, Kimmirut’s culture is rich, and the community holds a distinctive appreciation for the arts.
The all-encompassing album has something for everyone, whether you want a northern anthem, a reflection of human resilience, or an energy boost for the gym. On this project, Leo Matthew pairs dreamy synths and punchy bass with hard-hitting and raw lyricism.
The album’s first single, I.N.U.K., is set to release on June 21st. Dropping on National Indigenous People’s Day, I.N.U.K. is an ode to the friends, family, and peers that have been lost and stands as a celebration of Inuit and Indigenous culture.
Through his music, Leo wants to act as a beacon of light for members of his community: “Growing up, I didn’t get to have many Inuk role models to look up to, especially in music,” Leo Matthew reveals, “Jordan TooToo, the first Inuk player in the NHL, was my sports role model. I want to be like Jordan TooToo for music.”
The Boy From Nunavut was produced by Matt Snell and Robbie Brett, who have previously worked with big names like Dua Lipa, Drake, and many more international headliners. The album is being released through Hitmakerz and distributed by CD Baby. Financial support was provided by the Government of Nunavut.
Though The Boy From Nunavut is Leo Matthew’s debut album under his own name, it is not his first release. In 2023, Leo Matthew released his debut single, Alive, under the stage name, Inukutaa. The song celebrates the essence of life and acts as a reminder that we should not take it for granted. Alive is exciting and uplifting, a sound that Leo Matthew has carried over to The Boy From Nunavut.
